Lao food turns out to be surprisingly: healthy. Rather than imprinting an unforgettable gastronomic experience (i.e. a tom yum that puts you on fire from A to Z) , this friendly cuisine leaves an impression that lingers in your memory for longer than you’d imagine.
Read on to discover the 5 Food Experiences to Try at Laos.
1. Breakfast: Nosh along Mekong river (Luang Prabang)
Opposite the sleepy river bank where guesthouses mushroomed, sprawl rows of café-like restaurants idling under shades of big white umbrellas. The river might look like teh tarik, but rest assured it doesn’t stink.
{With a peaceful view like that by your side, waiting for food becomes part of the beauty}
{Our bakery café pick-of-the-day}
{Hearty breakfast, served!}
{MUST TRY: Fried Mekong River Weed}
{Homemade Lao sausages}
{Mango sticky rice – yes, just like the one from neighbouring Thailand}
2. Lunch: Conquer Lao specialities in one go at Coconut Garden (Luang Prabang)
Perfect place to chillax by day, romantic garden by night. Both versions provide mouth-watering local dishes.
{Imagine these colorful lanterns light up at night}
{Drink more water Lao beer}
{Each dish here is a MUST TRY Lao specialty. Take note of the words in bold below}
{Dried Buffalo Meat – best accompanied with Lao beer. P.S. Be prepared for aching gums}
{Padeck – a traditional 3 years (!) preserved fish with salt}
{Laap – Marinated meat / poultry / fish with herbs}
{Sticky rice}
Address: Sisavangvong Road, Luang Prabang, Laos. 856 71 252 482
3. Tea time: Indulge in the best croissants like a French lady (Vientiane)
Le Banneton is a chain of bakery café available at both Vientiane and Luang Prabang, and to state the obvious; famous for their croissants. I think it’s safe to say you’ve not been to Laos if you have not eaten here; though I find the food so-so (except for the croissants).
{Croissant The AMAZING, with juicy ham tucked with love inside}
{The ‘average Joe’ and ‘plain Jane’}
{Lao coffee is a must to accompany such occasion, don’t you agree?}
Address: (Vientiane) Rue Nokeokoumane BP 568 Ban Mixay, Vientiane, Laos. (Luang Prabang) 46 Sakkhaline Road, Luang Prabang, Laos.
4. Dinner: Dine at the duck diner
Not far from Le Banneton (Vientiane) hides Lao Kitchen, where tasty duck laap are served.
{Lao ‘Cha Yen‘}
{Duck Laap}
Address: Lao Kitchen Hengboun Rd., Baan Anou, Vientiane, Laos.
5. Snack: Grilled bananas, a Lao street food staple
{You’ll see this everywhere. P.S. Most of them contain black peppercorn-like seeds}
Now, which is your favorite? (:
