PrOpEr but Broken.

I felt so sorry.

Sorry to my parents -I didn’t get to spend much time with them when I’m at home. Instead, I’m still sitting here facing this bloody grey laptop with connection crawling as slow as a bloody snail.

My HTC pda is still at the ‘hospital’. It let me down after I showered it with unconditional love and affection for 4 months. So I came home to country, ransacked my drawers, and found my old Motorola L6; all glittered up with cheap fake pink and white crystals. I checked my inbox.

I couldn’t help feeling even more sorry to all the people whose messages I never got to reply. Airene, Audrey, Oliver’s… All of them who sayang me most. What have I done?! Thank God I didn’t reply any of those fair-weather friends’ either; or I can’t sleep tonight.

So I replied them all; some with a “Sorry” note in the beginning, some at the end of the message. I even SMSed those I lost touch with, but no one replied back.

*****

You know what was this ONE thing I felt so sorry to me about? Have you ever heard of people saying, “If you rare a dog for too long, you will look like one?“. Or an adopted child will eventually grow to look like her stepmother? A white man will start using “LAHS” if he resides here for too long and find himself a Malaysian wife.

TWO days BEFORE I entered Malaysian Dreamgirl, I broke up with my Chinese Australian boyfriend. I don’t want to get into how hard it was, especially for me, during that period, but one thing for sure was this thing that I kept on getting. -My Australian Accent. Sounds like a DISEASE, doesn’t it???

***

They, hated me “and” it, but they loved watching me “with” it. Perhaps it’s like AIDS and sex. I don’t know.

But the truth is, I still can’t differentiate an AUSTRALIAN accent, and an AMERICAN accent until TODAY!!!!! I swear I can’t. So tell me, how was I to fake it.

I AM SO SICK OF TRYING TO SPEAK
PROPER-BUT-MUST-BE-A-BIT-BROKEN” ENGLISH;
ADDING IN DASHES OF “LAHS” & “LEHS” & “LOHS” IN MY SENTENCES,
JUST TO PROVE / SHOW THAT
I, TEY CINDY,
AM A HUMBLE GIRL WITH MALAYSIAN QUALITIES,
WHEN I SPEAK!!!

Because that doesn’t make anyone who hates me change their fucking mind to like me anyway, righttt??? So WHY DO IT.

IF YOUR ENGRISH IS SO POWDERFUL, WHY AREN’T YOU AN ENGLISH TEACHER?
***

And when in the world have I EVER said that MY English, is GOOD. WHEN???

NOBODY has to have “good English” in order to blog. Most Americans couldn’t even point out where New York is on the map, does that mean they have to live in Greenland? Can you point to ME where Labis or CHA’AH is, in a Malaysian map?

You might have big brains, but your brains are as small as your balls or tits!

*****

It’s time to STOP feeling SORRY.

I AM FROM A SMALL TOWN WHERE MY
ENGLISH TEACHER
WAS THE ONLY ONE I COULD SPEAK ENGLISH TO;
& I LEARNED SPEAKING ENGLISH BY
WATCHING “F.R.I.E.N.D.S“,
& READING ESSAY BOOKS TO THE MIRROR!

I should be proud to be able to speak English in a city like K.L today.

To all Chinese bloggers out there who blogs in Mandarin,

Do not be afraid to blog in this foreign language, even if you are not good at it.
You LEARN from mistakes, and only those cowards who are AFRAID to FALL; are glued to where they are, for ever because their egos are bigger than their thick faces!

STOP CRITICIZING A MOVIE AS BAD,
IF YOU CAN’T PRODUCE A BETTER ONE;
OR EVEN COME CLOSE.

WHO IS PAYING YOU TO BE A BAD CRITIQUE?

YOUR BLOG???

SO I WTRIE LKIE TIHS & I STLIL GTE CA$H.

YIIIEEUUW???

Australian slang? What slang? And you don't have to sound Malaysian to be Malaysian. Ada di minda, ada di hati, cukup la.

it's not a compulsory to be able to speak fluent English with an add of cool foreign slang. Speaking like the way you speak shows who you are as Cindy Tey, not someone else.

"People can speak in beautiful languages, but it doesn't always gives them an 'A'. It just sounds nice & intelligent but not always that it shows their characteristics"

You speak/write whats in your mind and what you want to show us,telling us your story…and that's what matters most in PINK LABEL blog. That is why we always come here to read your blog, babe.

well, i think it's ok to speak with good english.. it's hard to find that now in malaysia… (sad to say), so yeah, be proud of it! btw, it's aussie/ american "accent" not "slang"… well, many malaysians tend to get that wrong. slang is used more for the kind of words you use, not how you pronounce your words. ciao! =)

Are you talking about SLANG or ACCENT?! Who are you to comment when you can't even differentiate the two? Either way, you definitely do NOT speak with an Aussie accent or slang. This is coming from an Aussie Chinese!

    Thanks, hanibunny. Love your support!!!

dear yeah, i don't disagree with u. but somehow this issue reappeared again & since i got a bit frustrated, i typed this out and posted it without thinking twice. had to let this out anyywayyy… ((:

dear johnny tai, got what u mean of coz. but this was what i realized alrite; that i am subconsciously detaching what i 'learned' which are not bad things. i think i forgot to add that:

I AM FROM A SMALL TOWN WHERE MY ENGLISH TEACHER WAS THE ONLY ONE I COULD SPEAK ENGLISH TO; & I LEARNED SPEAKING ENGLISH BY WATCHING "F.R.I.E.N.D.S", & READING ESSAY BOOKS TO THE MIRROR!

i think i should get a credit for that.

hey yanny, thank you. will change that in a bit. thanks!

dear Laine, well THANKS a HELLL LOT; cuz i definitely DON'T THINK I SPEAK WITH AN ACCENT! just speak the way i do & people said it was OZ; i don't get it either.

i have just been following your blog lately. i see another point of it beside speaking english. From your entry, you mentioned about people critise without knowing that they cant do the same thing or job well. It actually sent a message to me that i should not critise people (if i happened to do that) and be happy with everyone. thanks.

anyway, i spent quite a while to write perfect english LA. haha.

Hey, I have been reading your blog since the MDG but didn't leave you any comment before. But hey! You know what? I found out that this is the best post that I have read so far. I like your tone while writing and also the way you express your thoughts in this post. It's so straight forward and honest.

Yea, you can call me crazy saying that this is the post when you have much more other posts with those beautiful pictures of yours.

But then, who can criticize me for my own taste and opinions? Am I right, Cindy?=)

I think there's but one language to consider people are good in this world, the language of the heart, and whatever you use, either speak or write to express yourself — others should not criticize and just do their own thing unless otherwise they have nothing better to do in their lives except attending on other people's lives without looking at their own stupid mistakes. I think you're doing pretty well, so don't let others get into you. One word for it they're just "JEALOUS" :P

Keep on blogging! I think you look great in pink!

I have lived in America for four years. I have to put on my American accent to speak to these people every freaking day, sometimes i feel like the accent has become a part of me. But when I speak to my friends back home in Malaysia, I don't pretend. I don't put on my that fake accent. I was born and I've been brought up for 17 years of my life back in Malaysia and a few measly years of living abroad is not gonna change that in you. So don't be so cocky. For all I know, you may be a really nice and pleasant person in real life and I'm not bias against you whatsoever but yea, don't be so cocky, woman.

Hey there. Certain Malaysians are just unable to accept Malaysians who speaks good English. & whenever you speak with an accent, you will automatically be categorized under the "lansi" category. They would say that you speak with such an accent just to impress. Never mind those critics, we have to learn how to live through these malicious comments. I am also a student in Australia, we have open up our minds and embrace new cultures as we spend our time with the locals in Australia. Nevertheless, it is very important to remain unscathed from these events. :)

well written post!! I can't help but to comment when i saw the part about the australian accent!!
I got that comment heaps when I first came back after studying in Sydney for a year. The fact that I barely speak to Malaysian during my whole year @ uni, and the fact that i am so sick of trying to explain twice/thrice to people just so they would be able to understand what i was saying, I begin to speak with that accent.

I so agree with zisheng about certain malaysians having problem accepting malaysians who could speak proper english and they think u are snobbish!!

I totally understand how you feel about people thinking that you fake that accent when u are just merely getting use to the culture and the accent.

btw, nice pictures u have there.:D

dear ophelia, i don't put on an accent to fake it. cuz i can't even differentiate em. & mixin em' up is just gonna make me sound stupid. i don't even know what accent ppl said i was using; but so far, i feel exactly like i'm forcing myself to maximize the use of lahs to 'look home', & it simply just don't feel 'healthy'. (:

dear zi sheng, automatically pink-labeled as cocky, see?? lolx! jk lah. "open up our minds and embrace new cultures" -why never i thought of writing it this way!? good, good! ;D

Think about this..if one speaks with an accent (whatever it is as long as your Malaysian English doesn't sound like Malaysian), does that mean that the person is cocky?
Eg. Cindy speaks with OZ accent = Cocky
What if a Chinese speaks with an Indian accent? – Ada cocky ka?
why are we stereotyping those with accent.?
My point is..YES there are people that put up an accent and there are those that just got used to it. We are in no place to judge this people until we get to know them personally.
ALWAYS give a person a chance to proof himself/herself

    Cheers people!!! Over and Out!
